Each plague was really bad and very hurtful to the people of Egypt. But that didn’t seem to bother Pharaoh. After each plague Moses and Aaron asked him to let the Israelites go and each time the Pharaoh’s heart is hardened and he says, “NO!” Finally, the Lord tells Moses that he will bring one more plague upon the Egyptians and then Pharaoh will let the Israelites go. The final plague is called the “Plague of the Firstborn” or the “Passover” (Exodus 11). In the Passover, the Lord passes over the homes of the Egyptians and the Israelites at night, but only the firstborn son of each Egyptian family dies. Why? Because the Israelites followed special instructions from the Lord and were spared the horrors of the plague (Exodus 12). The Egyptians are so distraught from the final plague that they encourage the Israelites to leave and even give them clothing, silver, and gold as they leave. Lastly, God told the Israelites to celebrate the “Passover” each year as a reminder of his power and what he had done for his people.
