The Flood – Genesis 6:5-8:22
The Story in a Nutshell
As
the human population on earth grew God noticed that the people were
becoming more and more wicked; their thoughts were totally evil.
God was sorry that He made them and decided to completely wipe out all
the people including the birds and animals. But one man, Noah,
found favor with God.
Noah was a righteous man, the
only one living on earth. He followed God and had a close
relationship with him. One day God told Noah the he was going to
destroy all the living creatures on earth with a great flood. He
told Noah to build a boat (the ark), and he gave him complete details
on the design and dimensions. Noah and his wife, his sons (Shem,
Ham, Japheth), and their wives would be safe on the boat. When
the boat was finished, Noah was also to bring a pair of every kind of
animal – male and female – into the boat and keep them alive during the
flood.
Noah did exactly as God commanded. When
the flood came, he, his family and the animals went aboard to
safety. It rained forty days and nights and water covered the
entire earth, but Noah and the ark were safe. The flood covered
the earth for 150 days and everything died that lived and breathed on
land. Slowly the waters receded and five months after the flood
began the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat. After
several months of waiting, Noah sent out a dove to find dry land; it
finally did. Shortly thereafter, Noah, his wife, his sons
and their wives, and the animals returned to dry earth. Then Noah
built an altar and made a sacrifice to God. God was pleased, and
said that he would never again destroy all living things even though
people’s thoughts and actions are bent toward evil.
