Paul Arrested in Jerusalem – Acts 21:27 - 22:29The Story in a nutshell Paul was nearing the end of his purification ritual when a great mob stirred up against him. They accused him of teaching against the Jews and telling everyone to disobey the Jewish laws. They accused him of speaking against the Temple and making it dirty by bringing gentiles into it. The city was overwhelmed by the accusations and a great riot followed. Paul was dragged from the Temple and the people tried to kill him, but the local Roman commander jumped in and rescued him. He was rescued from being killed, but he wasn’t free. He was arrested and put in chains. Paul spoke to the commander privately, and the commander allowed him to speak to the angry crowd. It surprised the crowd when he spoke to them in their own language which was Aramaic. Paul told the crowd his story – how he had persecuted Christians, how he was struck down and blinded, and how he came to know and follow Jesus. Everything seemed to be going fine until Paul mention that had been sent to convert Gentiles to follow Jesus. At that point the crowd grew angry again and demanded that he be killed. The Roman commander was about to take action when Paul asked “Is it legal for you to whip a Roman citizen who hasn’t been tried?” It wasn’t, and that scared everyone. The soldiers quickly stopped what they were doing, and the commander became frightened because he had ordered Paul, a Roman citizen, to be whipped. Do you remember the story?
