Jairus’ Daughter – Luke 8:40-56

The Story in a Nutshell

The story continues…

When Jesus arrived at the other side of the lake there was a crowd waiting for him.  Out of the crowd rushed a man named Jairus, a leader of the local synagogue.  He fell at Jesus’ feet and begged him to come home with him.  Seems his 12 year old daughter was dying and she needed help.

Jesus went with Jairus and so did the crowd; they surrounded both of them.  In the crowd was a woman who had been bleeding for 12 years; none of the doctors had been able to cure her.  The woman came up behind Jesus, touched the hem of his garment, and she was healed.

Suddenly Jesus stopped.  “Who touched me?” He asked.  Everyone looked around and denied it.  “It was probably someone just brushing against you in the crowd,” said Peter.  “No!” said Jesus.  “Someone touched me on purpose.  I could feel the healing power go out from me.”

Now the woman that touched Jesus was worried.  She knew that he knew someone had touched him on purpose.  She began to tremble, fell to her knees before Jesus, and explained why she had touched him.  Jesus said, “Don’t worry.  Your faith has healed you.  Go in peace.”

While Jesus was speaking to the woman a messenger arrived from Jairus’ home. He reported that Jairus’ daughter had just died. “There is no need for Jesus to come now,” he said.  When Jesus heard this he said to Jairus, “Don’t worry, just trust me.  Everything’s gonna be okay.”

When Jesus arrived at Jairus’ home there were many people inside weeping and wailing. He told everyone, “Stop weeping!  The little girl is not dead, she is only sleeping.”  The crowd only laughed for they knew the little girl was dead.

Then Jesus had all the people leave the house.  He only allowed Jairus and his wife and James, Peter and John, to remain with him.  Jesus went to the little girl, took her hand, and said in a loud voice, “Get up!”  And the little girl jumped up.  Jesus then told her parents to give her something to eat for she was hungry.

Jairus and his wife were overwhelmed by what had happened and wanted to tell everyone, but Jesus told them not to tell anyone.

To be continued…
