Elisha’s Miracles – 2 Kings 2:9-25; 4:1-7

The Story in a Nutshell

The prophet Elijah had a faithful disciple; his name was Elisha.  Elisha asked Elijah if he could be his rightful successor when he died.  This was a difficult request, but Elijah said, “If you see me when I am taken from you, then you will get your request.”  One day as they were walking along, a chariot of fire drawn by horses of fire appeared in the sky. Elijah was drawn up and carried away into heaven by a whirlwind .  Elisha saw the whole thing, so he became Elijah’s successor.  Then the spirit of the Lord came upon Elisha and he was able to do many miraculous things.  First, Elisha took Elijah’s cloak, struck the waters of the Jordan River, and the waters divided. allowing Elisha to cross over on dry land. Another time he threw salt into bad water and it became good.  One time some boys were making fun of Elisha calling him names.  He cursed them in the name of the Lord and two bears came out of the woods and mauled the boys.  Still another time a widow came to Elisha and cried out for help.  She owed a creditor money, and the person was threatening to take her two sons as slaves.  Elisha told her to take the only thing she had in her house, a flask of oil, and begin filling empty jars.  She did so until every jar was filled to the brim.  Then Elisha told her to sell the oil, pay her debts, and use the remaining money to support her sons.  These were some of the miracles of Elisha.
