Crossing the Sea – Exodus 13:17-14:31

The Story in a Nutshell

When Pharaoh finally allowed the Israelites to leave Egypt, God led them out guiding them by a pillar of cloud during the day and a pillar of fire at night.  The two pillars led the people through the wilderness toward the Red Sea.  Pharaoh thought the Israelites would become fearful, change their mind, and return to Egypt, but they didn’t.  Pharaoh became upset.  “What have we done, letting all those slaves run away?” So, Pharaoh called out his troops and chariots and chased after them.  When the Israelites saw Pharaoh and his troops coming down upon them they became sore afraid.  They started complaining to Moses that this was all his fault, but Moses told them not to be afraid.  Then the Lord spoke to Moses telling him to get the people moving to the Red Sea.  The Lord told Moses to hold his shepherd’s staff over the water.  When he did, the sea parted and the people were able to walk on dry land toward safety on the other side.  But Pharaoh and his troops were right behind and continued to chase the Israelites.  When all the Israelite were safely through the sea, God told Moses to again raise his hand over the waters.  The waters crashed back together killing Pharaoh and all the soldiers.  When the Israelites saw the mighty power of the Lord, they feared him, and they put their faith in him and his servant Moses.
