Creation – Genesis 1:1–2:25

The Story in a Nutshell

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth, and He did it in six days. On day one God created light (day) and darkness (night).  On day two God separated the waters from above from the waters below, and He called the space “sky”.  On day three God gathered the waters together and called it “seas”, He created dry ground and called it “land”, and He caused the land to burst forth with grass, seed-bearing plants and trees.  On day four God created the sun, moon, and stars.  On day five God filled the seas with fish and other creatures and the sky with every kind of bird.  On day six God filled the earth with every kind of animal, and He created people, male and female, in His own image.  He formed man from the dust of the ground, breathing the breath of life into it.  Then God put man in charge of managing all creation.  As God completed His work each day, He said, “It is good.”  And on the seventh day, God rested and declared the day holy.

Part of God’s creation was a garden in Eden where he placed man in the center to tend it.  God told the man he could eat anything in the garden except fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.  Then God noticed that the man was alone, so he made a companion to help him.  He did this by causing Adam to fall into a deep sleep, taking a rib from Adam, and making a woman (Eve) from the rib.  Eve became Adam’s wife, and although both were naked, neither of felt any shame.
