Angel Gabriel Visits Mary - Luke 1:26-38The Story in a Nutshell The story begins... A long time ago in the land of Galilee, an area of the Kingdom of Israel, there lived a young woman named Mary. Her home was in the village of Nazareth where she was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph. One day God sent the angel Gabriel to visit Mary. Gabriel appeared to Mary and greeted her, then told her that she was a favored woman and the Lord was with her. This confused and disturbed Mary. What did Gabriel mean? Gabriel continued. “Don’t be frightened; God is going to bless you. You will become pregnant and have a son, you are to name him Jesus, he will be very great and be called the Son of God, he will reign over Israel, and his kingdom will last forever.” But this posed a problem for Mary. “How can I have a baby? I’m a virgin and not yet married.” Gabriel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of God will oversee you.” Further, Gabriel told Mary that the baby would be holy and again said that the baby would be called the Son of God. What Mary was thinking? Then Gabriel finished his message with the comforting words. “Your relative Elizabeth has become pregnant in her old age, so nothing is impossible with God.” Now Mary felt better. Then she said to Gabriel, “I am the Lord’s servant and I am willing to accept whatever God has planned. May everything you have said come true.” And with that, Gabriel went away. To be continued...
